Why pass on your reading?

Every year, between May 1 and August 31, your water meter is read, so that your bill is based on your actual consumption rather than an estimate. Transmitting your reading is quick and easy, and means you only pay for what you actually use.

How a water meter works

The water flowing through your meter turns a turbine or piston, whose movement is converted into the volume displayed on the dial in cubic meters (m³). Regular meter readings ensure billing based on actual consumption and detect any leaks.

Main causes of variations in water consumption

A household’s water consumption can vary considerably depending on a number of factors. Here are the most common causes:

  • Sudden water damage
  • Leaky toilet
  • Dripping faucet
  • Frequent filling of a pool or spa
  • Defective sprinkler system (nozzle)
  • Increased number of occupants on the property (more showers, more laundry, etc.).
  • Change of owner or tenant (lifestyle habits)

How do I check for a water leak?

  1. Turn off all the taps in your home.
  2. Note the numbers on your meter.
  3. Do not use water until the following morning.
  4. Take a new reading the next morning before use.
  5. Compare the figures. If they have increased, there’s probably a leak somewhere between the meter and the inside of the house.

Leaks often come from toilets, taps and showers. They are not always audible or visible to the naked eye. Regular meter readings are the surest way to detect them early.

A special case: condominium owners

In accordance with municipal infrastructure bylaw 485, water consumption is billed directly to each co-owner. The amount is calculated in proportion to your share, as defined in the declaration of co-ownership for your building.

To obtain the adjustment calculation for a real estate transaction, the meter reading(s) for the building must be sent to us. We will then calculate the portion corresponding to the seller’s fraction. Please note that a confirmation of the amount will be provided, but no additional invoice will be issued for this adjustment.

The annual invoice is still sent out in mid-September. It will be sent to the buyer and will cover the whole year.
