How a water meter works

The water flowing through a water meter turns a turbine or piston, whose movement is converted into the volume displayed on the dial in cubic meters (m³). Mechanical meters (manual reading) are available. Regular meter readings ensure accurate billing and detect any leaks.

Variation factors in water consumption

A household’s water consumption can vary considerably depending on a number of factors. Here are the main causes that can influence your water consumption:

  • Sudden water damage
  • Leaky toilet
  • Neglected water leakage (e.g., small drops of water dripping from the tap over a long period of time)
  • Frequent pool/spa filling
  • Defective sprinkler system (nozzle)
  • Increase in the number of people living in the home (more showers, more laundry, etc.).
  • New owner/tenant (change in lifestyle)

Tip

Leaks often come from toilets, taps and showers. These leaks are not always noisy or visible to the naked eye.

To check for a water leak, turn off all the taps in your home and read your meter. Do not use water overnight. Take a new reading the next morning before use. If the figures have increased, there’s a water leak somewhere between the meter and the inside of the house.

Good to know!

Regularly reading your meter will enable you to detect any abnormal consumption due to a leak!

Water consumption adjustment for condominium owners

In accordance with Bylaw 485 on infrastructure, we now bill water consumption directly to each condominium owner.

If you wish to obtain the calculation for the water consumption adjustment, the meter reading(s) for the building must be provided. We will then calculate the adjustment according to the seller’s fraction of the co-ownership. Please note that no invoice will be issued, only a confirmation of the adjustment amount.

The date of the water bill remains mid-September, and it will be sent in the purchaser’s name for the entire year.

Question and answer on water meter reading

The amount is divided into portions of the fraction of your building.

All condominiums have a declaration of co-ownership that explains the % share of each condo based on the condo’s living area. Each owner therefore receives a bill based on the building’s total consumption at the percentage listed for their unit.
