Since 2003, the use of chemical pesticides has been banned in Brossard. The current by-law is designed to prevent health and environmental risks. This initiative stems from the introduction of the Quebec Pesticide Management Codewhich regulates the use of pesticides for aesthetic purposes on private and public property.
What are pesticides?
Pesticides include all substances, materials or micro-organisms intended to control, destroy or repel an organism considered undesirable. The most common pesticides are herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.
What types of pesticides are covered by this regulation?
Any person wishing to apply a pesticide other than a low-impact pesticide or biopesticide must first obtain from the City a permit for each application. To obtain a permit, citizens must demonstrate, at their own expense, that the situation constitutes an infestation and that they have exhausted all other recognized, environmentally-friendly methods.
Registered contractors
Any pesticide application other than a low-impact pesticide must be carried out by a contractor registered with the City. Similarly, no one may apply pesticides of any kind on behalf of another unless they hold an annual registration certificate issued by the City for this purpose.
