Transport of hazardous materials

Learn to recognize hazard pictograms

Associated with the page Types of emergency situations

Dangerous goods are identified by pictograms on the containers in which they are stored or on the vehicles in which they are transported.

Learn to recognize these pictograms, so you’ll know which materials are being transported and what the nature of the hazard is. In the event of an accident, you’ll be able to protect yourself more adequately and better inform the emergency services about the materials involved in the accident.

Follow our prevention tips

If you are the victim or witness of an accident involving hazardous materials, follow these tips:

  • Move away from the accident site and invite other victims or witnesses to do the same;
  • Notify emergency services by dialing 911; and
  • Avoid smoking near the accident site.

In the event of a spill or leak, avoid all contact with the product. If you are splashed by the product, notify the emergency services even if there are no apparent consequences.

Follow the authorities’ instructions

When the situation requires it, the authorities issue instructions, for example in the event of soil contamination or following the passage of a toxic smoke cloud. Pay close attention to these instructions and follow them. These may include :

  • comply with an evacuation order;
  • respect a safety perimeter;
  • not to consume water and certain foodstuffs;
  • clean your home or belongings; or
  • monitor any physical symptoms that may develop.
