Tornado

Associated with the page Types of emergency situations

A rare occurrence in Quebec, the tornado is a destructive meteorological phenomenon, concentrating enormous amounts of energy in a small space. It can uproot trees, overturn cars and destroy buildings. It moves at high speed and can change its trajectory abruptly.

There are certain signs that can indicate the onset of a tornado. Here they are:

  • a very dark sky tinged with green or yellow
  • frequent flashes of lightning and thunder;
  • a torrential downpour;
  • hail;
  • a rumbling or whistling sound; and
  • a funnel-like cloud at the base of a storm cloud.

Take precautions during a tornado

Never approach a tornado. On the contrary, think about moving away from them or protecting yourself from them. In the event of a tornado, follow the instructions issued by the authorities.

Inside a building

To protect yourself inside a structurally sound building, proceed as follows:

  • Unplug all electrical appliances;
  • Take refuge in the basement or first floor, in the most central room of the building, or in a corridor;
  • Take cover under heavy furniture;
  • Keep away from windows to avoid injury from flying glass;
  • Keep away from doors and outside walls;
  • Do not use elevators; and
  • Wait until it calms down before going outside.

Outside a building

Follow these tips if you are outside and are unable to get away from the tornado or take refuge inside a safe building:

  • Keep a safe distance from trees, telephone poles and power lines;
  • Take refuge in a ditch or a fold in the ground, lying face down and protecting your head with your hands, or shelter under a solid structure such as a bridge;
  • Protect yourself from objects that can be blown by the wind; and
  • Be prepared to move in the event of flash flooding.

Beware of false shelters

Some places should be avoided during a tornado because they do not provide adequate shelter:

  • cars;
  • mobile homes; and
  • buildings with huge roofs, such as gymnasiums, churches or barns, as these are liable to collapse.

If you find yourself in one of these places, leave quickly and seek safe shelter.
