Keeping our city sparkling clean
From now on, the experienced maintenance crews of the Public Works Department are hard at work to offer residents a clean, safe and flowery city for the summer season. With a methodical, multi-phase approach throughout spring, summer and fall, we make sure that every corner of Brossard shines with cleanliness.
Your help counts!
As during winter snow removal, we appreciate the cooperation of citizens in helping us clean up our streets. If possible, park your vehicle in your parking lot, allowing our brooms to do a spotless job. Our team is working hard, one kilometer, one ton and one flower at a time, to get Brossard “on its 36” for the summer season! Together, let’s make our city shine!
For those who like statistics, here are some figures relating to our actions in the field:
Brossard is nearly 600 kilometers of brushing, sweeping and cleaning!
- 350 refreshed green spaces to welcome you
- 50 sports fields to keep you in shape!
- 4,500 trees, perennials and shrubs planted to green Brossard
- 12,000 metric tons of fluxes and abrasives to forget
- 50 metric tons of bituminous mix to fill potholes
- 2250 hydrants inspected
- 250 kilometers of sewer pipes cleaned
- 5000 street catch basins scoured
Steps to a clean city
Public network stage
Sweepers, watering cans and other small appliances clean up the city’s boulevards, streets and other thoroughfares.
- On the roads: mechanical sweepers make an initial round to reduce the quantity of abrasive stones deposited between the pavement and the kerb. It takes three passes of the broom to completely clear the roadway of abrasives.
- On cycle paths and footpaths: mechanical cleaning should begin when the ground is drier. Intervening when the ground is wet would damage the foundations and the public domain.
- Potholes: filling continues depending on weather conditions. Note that clogging is carried out all year round.
DID YOU KNOW?
To begin the cleaning process, a selection of sectors is rotated each year.
Stage equipment, parks and public spaces
The City carries out its operations in strict compliance with the Public Health Department’s directives on sanitary restrictions.
Operations carried out:
- Park cleaning
- Garbage collection in parks
- Inspect and repair play modules
- Fill in playground fibers (mulch)
- Repairing fences and street furniture

And what about my land?
It’s very important to bear in mind that the purpose of abrasive stone spreading operations is to make and keep pavements and sidewalks safe for road users and people using sidewalks. The amount of abrasives applied to surfaces can vary considerably from season to season, depending on weather conditions.
During clearing and/or blowing operations, which are also necessary to ensure user safety, it is undeniable that some of the abrasive stone ends up on land adjacent to the roadway or sidewalks. It is the owner’s responsibility to clean up and collect these abrasives.
Not on my land!
Here’s a tip to protect your lawn surface: installing a tarpaulin will prevent dirt from landing directly on your lawn when the snow melts.

FAQ – Street cleaning
Work will start during the week of April 17, and will gradually expand over the following weeks.
Each year, we alternate the sector in which the cleaning begins.
Clean-up begins in mid-April, with priority given to boulevards, followed by collector and residential streets.
The mechanical sweeper makes an initial round to reduce the quantity of abrasive stones deposited between the pavement and the curb. It takes three passes of the broom to completely clear the roadway of abrasives.
Street cleaning takes about 40 working days.
After this initial cleaning, the streets are cleaned according to a pre-established schedule and weather conditions. Each street is cleaned approximately every 3 weeks
Potholes can be filled all year round, weather permitting. We work proactively, conducting regular network assessments. In addition, we process the requests we receive on this subject in order of priority.
In spring, we carry out a “blitz” between March and May, weather permitting.
FAQ – Cleaning sidewalks, paths and bikeways
Work will start during the week of April 17, and will gradually expand over the following weeks.
Cleaning starts with sidewalks, with priority given to boulevards.
As soon as ground conditions are suitable for cleaning (dry, hardened soil), we clean footpaths and cycle paths. This usually takes place between mid-April and mid-May.
After this initial cleaning, sidewalks are swept sporadically, depending on weather conditions and as required.
Footpaths are cleaned about every 6 weeks, while cycle paths are cleaned about every 3 weeks.
Cleaning the city’s sidewalks takes around 40 working days. We calculate 15 working days for cleaning operations on footpaths and cycle paths.
After this initial cleaning, sidewalks are swept sporadically, depending on weather conditions and as required. Footpaths are cleaned about every 6 weeks, while cycle paths are cleaned about every 3 weeks.
FAQ – Parks and sports facilities
Normally, rinks are dismantled in early April, requiring 2 to 3 weeks to cover all the installations. Operations take place at this time, as we have to wait until ground conditions are favourable for our maintenance vehicles to be able to circulate in the parks where the rinks are located, without damaging the parks.
As soon as the ground conditions are right for the maintenance vehicles to move around the parks, we visit all the city’s parks and make sure they’re clean and safe. These maintenance operations can last up to 3 weeks, covering all the city’s parks, and will take place in May.
Certainly. Teams first pass through all the parks to pick up the largest debris, in order to provide access to the park as quickly as possible. The teams then tour the 350 green spaces around mid-May to complete the clean-up. These operations usually take place over 2 weeks.
This will depend on soil and weather conditions. Normally, the grounds are cleaned by mid-April. Once the soil is strong enough, i.e. drained of accumulated water, we proceed with levelling and final preparation of the land.
This process takes approximately 2 weeks, and most courses are generally able to welcome players by mid-May.
It’s important to wait until ground conditions are favorable. Using our equipment when the ground is wet could damage foundations and public property.

The city is asking its citizens to get involved through a few concrete actions:
-
- Avoid depositing debris from your property in the street or on sidewalks;
-
- Avoid parking on the street if you notice a cleaning operation in progress;
-
- Put bins, trash cans and basketball hoops in your driveway;
-
- Avoid creating piles of dust, stones or garbage in the street;
-
- Pick up litter in parks and on recreational trails, including dog excrement;
-
- The City will clean the sanitary sewer lines. For buildings with a private entrance lower than the street surface (e.g. basements or garages), it’s important to check that the water catchment screen is working properly. An obstruction could block the pipe. We recommend that you close the lids of the toilet bowls to avoid any damage caused by these operations.
Work in progress?
Whether you’re a citizen or an entrepreneur, the Town would like to remind you that, under the Règlement relatif à l’occupation du domaine public REG-397, a permit to occupy the public domain is required for :
Place a container, equipment or materials (e.g., stone, sand, earth, paving stones, pipes, etc.) on a public property, such as a roadway, sidewalk, median strip, bicycle lane or park;
temporarily close a street to traffic due to roadworks.
For more information on this permit and its form, contact Services Brossard at [email protected] or 450 923-6311.

Spring clean-up is all about erasing winter’s traces and restoring the city to its former glory, ensuring safe pavements and sidewalks, as well as clean and attractive parks and facilities.
While we’re all looking forward to the arrival of fine weather, we urge you to remain patient, as the completion of this work remains at the mercy of Mother Nature’s whims.
