In Brossard, the public domain includes all shared spaces accessible to everyone: streets, sidewalks, bike paths, trails, parks, municipal land, etc. To ensure safety, traffic flow and respect for the urban environment, its occupation by private goods or activities is strictly regulated.
This page informs you about what is and isn’t allowed to be placed or deposited in public spaces, whether temporarily or for longer periods.
Why regulate occupation of the public domain?
Every day, citizens, pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and emergency services use the city’s streets and sidewalks. When an object or vehicle encroaches on these spaces, it can :
- Obstruct traffic or visibility;
- Impede snow removal and maintenance;
- Represent a danger to public safety;
- Breaking the rules of cleanliness and good neighborliness.
That’s why Ville de Brossard oversees several types of occupancy, both permanent and seasonal.
Collection bins (garbage, recycling, compost)
Rolling bins (black, blue and brown) must be placed at the curb no earlier than 7 p.m. on the day before collection, and collected no later than the day of collection.
Best practices :
- Never leave a bin permanently on the curb or sidewalk;
- Avoid blocking pedestrian or bicycle paths;
- Place bins at least 1 m away from any obstacle (car, post, tree, etc.).
A bin left on the public highway outside the permitted hours may be considered an illegal occupation of the public domain.
Parking on lawns or shoulders
It is forbidden to park a vehicle:
- On a lawn or landscaped area;
- On public roads without respecting signs;
- In front of a hydrant, driveway or traffic sign.
Vehicles must be parked on specially prepared surfaces (asphalt, concrete or pavers). Unauthorized occupation of public land or property may result in a parking ticket.
Temporary shelters and containers
Prior authorization is required for the installation of temporary shelters or waste containers (for renovations, removals or works) on public property.
Examples of installations concerned:
- Containers for waste or materials;
- Temporary shelters partially encroaching on the street or sidewalk;
- Site fencing or scaffolding.
Permits are applied for through the Service d’urbanisme, and specific conditions (duration, location, signage, soil protection) may apply.
Garage Sale
Garage sales must take place during the periods set by the city (spring and autumn). Even during these periods, it is essential torespect the periods set by the City (spring and autumn). Even during these periods, it is forbidden:
- Occupy a sidewalk, street, bike path or multi-use trail;
- Block a visibility triangle (intersection);
- To hold a sale on a vacant lot.
Sales signs must also comply with authorized dimensions and durations.
Snow removal and dumping
In winter, it is strictly forbidden to :
- Push or blow snow onto public roads;
- Place snow in front of a hydrant or traffic sign;
- Obstruct access to sidewalks, streets or bus shelters.
These actions are detrimental to municipal operations and can cause safety hazards for users.
Request for authorization or notification
If you plan to temporarily occupy part of the public domain (installation, work, container, event), you must apply for authorization to occupy the public domain.
