Associated with the page Housing and neighborhood
At Brossard, residents’ peace of mind and quality of life depend on mutual respect and harmonious cohabitation. Certain situations can undermine this collective well-being: excessive noise, animals left unattended, disrespectful behavior or unauthorized use of fireworks. That’s why the city has enacted clear bylaws to control many types of nuisance.
This page sets out the main rules you need to know, the expected behavior and the steps to take in the event of a problem.
Noise
In general, it is forbidden to make any excessive, noisy noise likely to disturb the peace or tranquility of the neighborhood.
Rules to follow :
- Maximum noise level :
- 55 dB between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.
- 50 dB between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
- Bans between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. :
- Loud music, shouting, altercations
- Repetitive or unusual sounds audible from more than 25 metres away
- Occasional noise exceeding 75 dB prohibited at all times (except for certain one-off jobs)
Hours permitted for noisy residential work :
- Monday to Friday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Samedi et dimanche : entre 8 h et 17 h
Outside these hours, mechanical or repetitive noise may be the subject of a complaint.
Pets
Although appreciated, animals can be a nuisance if not properly supervised. In Brossard, owners have specific responsibilities.
Rules to follow :
- Dogs must be kept on a leash in all public places;
- Owners must pick up after their pets throughout the territory;
- Excessive barking, particularly in the evening, can be the subject of a complaint;
- Any animal circulating outdoors must be registered with the Town and have a valid license.
Disturbing or uncontrolled animal behavior can quickly become a source of conflict with neighbors…
Fireworks display
The use of pyrotechnics is strictly regulated. Fireworks may only be launched under certain conditions, with prior authorization from the town.
Permit requirements :
- Scale drawing of the site;
- Complete list of pyrotechnics used;
- Identification of the fireworker or person in charge;
- Proof of liability insurance of at least $2,000,000.
Authorization is issued by the Service de sécurité incendie de l’agglomération de Longueuil. Unauthorized use may result in a fine. In the event of nuisance caused by fireworks, especially outside reasonable hours, it is advisable to report the situation promptly.
Other common nuisances
Certain practices or negligence can harm the environment or community safety:
- Deposit or storage of materials or waste on a property visible from the street;
- Improper use of outdoor wood-burning or open fires (only propane gas fireplaces are permitted);
- Holding garage sales without respecting official dates and rules;
- Uncivil or disruptive behavior in parks and public places.
These situations, although sometimes isolated, can have a significant impact on neighborhood life.
