Preventive measures and safety instructions

The Service de sécurité incendie de Longueuil offers a series of prevention tips to help citizens protect their homes and families. Consult the complete guide Prevention tips

Visible address

Make sure your address is clearly visible from the street, because in an emergency, police, fire and ambulance services could lose precious time searching for your home.

Clearance of exits and balconies

In the event of fire, rapid evacuation is crucial. Keep exits, balconies and access paths clear at all times. Do not use balconies as storage space.

In winter, remember to clear snow from these areas to ensure their accessibility.

Smoke alarm

Every year, lives are lost due to the inability to evacuate during a fire. To prevent this, make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm per floor, including the basement.

Here are a few rules to follow:

  • Installation: The horn must be installed close to the ceiling, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, and bear the ULC certification seal.
  • Check: Test the horn every month to ensure it is working properly.
  • Battery change: Replace the batteries twice a year (ideally when the time changes) or as soon as the device emits a low battery signal.
  • Owner’s responsibilities:
    • Install, repair or replace defective smoke alarms.
    • Use models with built-in batteries lasting up to 10 years.
  • Tenant’s responsibilities:
    • Check that the horn is working properly, and change the batteries regularly.
    • Inform the owner immediately of any problems.

If several alarms are connected to one electrical circuit, make sure they are interconnected so that they all go off simultaneously when smoke is detected.

False alarms

Charges may apply for repeated false alarms. This measure is designed to raise public awareness of the operational and financial impact of alarm system malfunctions, and to encourage more rigorous maintenance and responsible use of these devices.

Heating appliances

To guarantee their efficiency and safety, heaters must be maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and operated in compliance with standards. Improper use of the appliance increases the risk of fire.

The installation must be approved by the Fire Department before being covered or put into service, and maintenance must comply with regulatory requirements.

Any modification or installation of an appliance, chimney or fireplace requires a permit from the Direction de l’aménagement et de l’urbanisme.

Important

Before installing a new combustion appliance, fireplace or chimney, or if you have any doubts about the compliance of an installation, make an appointment with a Preventive Measures Division technician by calling 450 463-7038.

Please note that there is a fee for the inspection of your installation.

The technician can visit your home to check the safety of your installation and ensure that it complies with standards and regulations, before closing the walls.

Safety tips for wood-burning appliances:

  • Use only hard, dry, high-quality wood.
  • Do not use a fireplace or stove as an incinerator.
  • Have your chimney swept at least once a year to ensure that it is working properly and safely.
  • Place extinguished ashes in a metal container on non-combustible ground.
  • Check the chimney regularly for residue build-up.

Please note that the Service de sécurité incendie de l’agglomération de Longueuil does not recommend or accredit specific companies. Be careful, some contractors are not qualified.

Chimney sweeping

Regular chimney sweeping is essential to reduce the risk of fire.

  • Annual chimney sweeping is necessary to prevent the risk of fire.
  • Inspect chimneys and flues every year, whatever the fuel used (gas, oil, wood, etc.).
  • You can sweep your chimney yourself, or hire a chimney sweep.
  • If you use a professional, make sure he or she is qualified and a member of a recognized professional association.
  • If repairs are necessary, check that the chimney sweep is licensed by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.
  • Always keep the chimney-sweeping receipt as proof that it has been carried out.

The Service de sécurité incendie de Longueuil does not recommend or accredit specific companies. Be careful, some contractors may not be qualified.

Barbecues and grills

It is important to follow certain instructions to ensure safety when using barbecues. We recommend keeping the device away from the house when in use.

  • Barbecues are only permitted in the courtyard behind the building.
  • Portable roasting or grilling appliances are not permitted indoors.
  • Charcoal or gas barbecues must not be used within 1 meter of a door or window.
  • They must rest on non-combustible material and be 500 mm from any combustible material.
  • Propane tanks may not be stored inside buildings, garages or sheds.
  • Make sure that your barbecue does not present a fire hazard or a nuisance to your neighbors.

Certain restrictions may apply depending on the borough, so always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
