Registering your pet

Ville de Brossard requires dog owners to obtain a license to register their pet. The tag supplied with your license is an indispensable tool for finding your dog if he gets lost.

Current regulations

  • Maximum of two (2) dogs per dwelling.
    • The total number of animals per dwelling is limited to four (4).
  • In a public place, a dog must at all times be under the control of a person capable of controlling it, according to Loi visant la protection des personnes P-38.002.
  • It’s forbidden to bring a dog into a public place during a party, event or public gathering, even if it’s specifically for animals. Public animals are allowed only where indicated and permitted.
    • In addition, dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 1.85 m. A dog weighing 20 kg or more must also wear a halter or harness attached to its lead at all times.
    • The Animal Control Regulations state:
      • Any violation of the By-law is punishable by a fine of $100 to $1,000 for an individual;
      • Any violation of the by-law is punishable by a fine of $200 to $2,000 for a corporation;
      • Fines are doubled for repeat offences.
  • Mandatory sterilization for all dogs on city territory. There are, however, a few exemptions:
    • The dog is under 6 months or over 10 years old;
    • Sterilization is not recommended by a veterinarian for health reasons;
      • It is necessary to provide a document authenticated by the veterinarian stating that, for medical reasons, sterilization is not recommended.
    • The dog is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club (provide pedigree when license is issued).

Restricted right of possession

The right of restricted possession constitutes the right for an owner to continue to possess a dog that is subject to a ban on certain breeds and to be with his or her dog on the territory of Brossard, or to any other ban resulting from a decision of the competent authority or a court of law. This fee applies only to dogs that were already present on the territory before this bylaw was added in 2016. New residents cannot move to Brossard with a prohibited dog breed.

Certain breeds of dogs are not allowed on the territory of the City of Brossard:

  • Bull-terrier;
  • Staffordshire bull terrier;
  • American pitt-bull-terrier (p.i.h.);
  • American Staffordshire terrier;
  • Hybrid dog resulting from a dog of one of the above-mentioned breeds and a dog of another breed;
  • A crossbred dog that possesses the substantial characteristics of a dog of one of the breeds listed above.

When a dog subject to a restricted right of possession is outside its property :

  • It must be kept on a leash;
  • It must wear a basket muzzle.

The dog’s guardian must :

  • Post a written review of your property;
  • The notice must be visible from public property and state: Caution – Dangerous dog”;
  • This notice is issued when the license is issued.

The right of restricted possession is extinguished if :

  • The owner violates the regulations;
  • The dog has been absent from Brossard for more than 9 months;
  • The dog dies.

This right is not transferable:

  • From one owner to another;
  • From one dog to another;
  • A dog that has lost this right is prohibited on Brossard territory.
