Why do I need a permit?
Whatever the type of residential renovation project, permits and certificates of authorization ensure that the work complies with current regulations and building standards.
Online permit application
Currently, it is possible to submit a permit application online for the following residential works:
- Tree felling
- Shed or garden shed
- Geothermal plant
- Bringing swimming pools up to standard
- In-ground pool, above-ground pool or spa
- Pergola
Permit request by e-mail
For all other work for which online applications are not available, you must complete the permit application form and submit it by e-mail along with the required documents to [email protected] or in person at Town Hall.
Types of work

Response and processing times may vary depending on the type of permit and the time of year. You can rest assured that our team will do its utmost to get back to you as quickly as possible. Please remain respectful and courteous to City employees.
Cost
Fees may apply to your application for a permit or certificate of authorization. These are indicated on the permit application form or, where applicable, on the online platform.
Payment
Permit and certificate applications made online must be paid by credit card.
For other applications, you can pay by cheque, debit, credit or Interac transfer, depending on the amount of your permit.
Sanctions and consequences
If you fail to apply for the necessary permit or certificate of authorization for your home renovation work, penalties will be applied and certain consequences may result:
- Fine: a fine could be imposed.
- Stop-work order: we can require immediate cessation of work until a permit is obtained.
- Demolition or retrofitting: if the work does not comply with municipal by-laws, the owner may be obliged to demolish or modify the work to bring it into compliance.
- Problems when selling the property: when selling, a buyer or notary may require proof of compliance, which can delay or compromise the transaction.
