Registering your pet

Ville de Brossard requires outdoor cat owners to obtain a license to register their pet. The tag supplied with your license is an indispensable tool for finding your cat if it gets lost. Although licensing is not compulsory for indoor cats, it is strongly recommended that you obtain one as well. This makes it easier to identify owners in the event of pet loss.

Current regulations

  • Maximum of three (3) cats per dwelling.
    • The total number of animals per dwelling is limited to four (4).
  • It’s forbidden to bring a cat into a public place during a party, event or public gathering, even if it’s specifically for animals. Public animals are allowed only where indicated and permitted. The Animal Control Regulations state:
    • Any violation of the By-law is punishable by a fine of $100 to $1,000 for an individual;
    • Any violation of the by-law is punishable by a fine of $200 to $2,000 for a corporation;
    • Fines are doubled for repeat offences.
  • Sterilization is mandatory for all outdoor cats in the city. There are, however, a few exemptions:
    • The cat is under 6 months or over 10 years old;
    • Sterilization is not recommended by a veterinarian for health reasons;
      • It is necessary to provide a document authenticated by the veterinarian stating that, for medical reasons, sterilization is not recommended.
    • The cat is registered with theCanadian Cat Association (provide pedigree when license is issued).
  • Sterilization is not mandatory for indoor cats. If you have more than one cat indoors, all but one must be sterilized.
  • Keepers must ensure that their cats are sterilized. Although the city will cover some of the costs, it is important that homeowners comply with this obligation.

CSRM program for stray cats

Do you care about the well-being of cats? Join our team of volunteers in the innovative Capture, Sterilization, Release and Colony Maintenance (CSRM) program, which aims to control feline overpopulation in the city.

By taking part in this program, you’ll have a positive impact on the health and lives of homeless felines by providing food and shelter for the colony’s cats. In the end, these community cats will be healthier and less aggressive, and will contribute to the balance of the territory.
