Considering the benefits of mature trees in an urban environment and the desire to increase forest cover as outlined in the 2020-2021 Environmental Action Plan, the subsidy program for planting a first tree in a front yard was created. This program is designed to encourage the planting of trees on properties that do not have trees in accordance with the current zoning by-law(REG-362).

The City reimburses 50% of the purchase cost of the first tree to be planted in the front yard, up to a maximum of :

  • 300 for a tree purchased from a Brossard business
  • 150 for a tree purchased in a store outside Brossard

Eligibility criteria

  • Be a resident of the City of Brossard.
  • To be eligible for the program, the selected tree must have the following characteristics:
    • For deciduous trees: minimum diameter of 5 cm, measured at 30 cm from the ground.
    • For conifers: minimum height of 1.5 m, measured at ground level.
    • The tree must reach a minimum height of 7 m at maturity.
    • The tree must not be a species whose planting is restricted or prohibited by the zoning by-law(REG-362, art. 179).
  • The planting must be carried out on a residential lot in the front yard.
  • Apply no later than 12 months after the date of purchase.
  • A limit of one subsidized tree per residential address will apply.
  • Newly planted trees must not be subject to compulsory planting after a felling permit has been obtained.
  • There must be no trees in the front yard before the new tree is planted.

Documents to be prepared

  • Proof of residence (e.g. driver’s license, electricity bill, municipal tax bill)
  • Invoice with the following items:
    • Date of purchase
    • Dealer name and contact details
    • List of purchased items
    • Total cost
  • 2 photos of the tree planted in the front yard
    • For deciduous trees
      • One with the tree and the house to confirm the location.
      • A close-up of the trunk with a tape measure behind the trunk to confirm the size of the trunk*.
    • For conifers
      • One with tree and house to confirm location
      • Use a measuring tape to confirm the size of the tree*.

* The numbers on the tape measure must be visible in the photo.

  10. American elm(Ulmus americana);

It is forbidden to plant any type of ash (species of the genus Fraxinus).
