Biodiversity island

Environment 30 April 2025 Last update 04/11/2025

New program – Pilot project

The aim of this program is to encourage residents to plant small islands of biodiversity-friendly native plants in place of grassy areas.

The plants will be mainly perennials, which will create an interesting visual effect.

Citizens must register to participate and, if eligible/selected, will receive a starter kit containing a bag of seeds (5m2) and an identification sign to place in front of the biodiversity island. Distribution of starter kits will begin in mid-May.

Why is it important to conserve biodiversity?

This is the foundation of ecosystems, enabling them to function healthily and efficiently. Humans depend on them not only for food and water, but also for climate regulation, air and water purification and pollination!

The main threats

Biodiversity is threatened on a global scale by a number of factors:

  • Habitat loss and fragmentation: Urban development has destroyed many natural habitats and divided them into smaller areas, isolating animal and plant populations and making them more sensitive to hazards and unforeseen events (disease, drought, etc.).
  • Pollution: The use of chemicals, fossil fuels and plastics disrupts ecosystems.
  • Invasive alien species: They threaten native species (which are naturally present) and degrade environments.
  • Climate change: Rising temperatures, more frequent and heavier precipitation and reduced snow cover all have an impact on biodiversity.
