How to proceed

If you notice a maintenance or sanitation problem, you must inform your landlord so that an amicable agreement can be reached to rectify the situation.

If the problem persists, you can take the matter to the Rental Administration Tribunal (formerly known as the Régie du Logement). The City will only intervene in the matters listed below, provided that the required documents have been filed with the City.

Issues dealt with by the city

  • Significant mold;
  • Water infiltration;
  • Vermin or insect pests;
  • Dangerous situation or threat to public health or safety;
  • Hazardous elements located outside the building.

Mandatory documents to be submitted to the City

  • Copy of a letter sent to the owner (stating the problem, the corrective action to be taken and a reasonable timeframe for completion of the corrective action);
  • Acknowledgement of receipt by a messenger service or bailiff (Proof that the letter has been received by the owner);
  • Photos of the problem;
  • Copy of lease;
  • If known, up-to-date contact details for the owner.
