The Brossard Georgette-Lepage library echoed all the way to the Utrecht library in the Netherlands, where the book Living Libraries; the house of the community around the world was launched on January 28. Suzanne Payette, director of the Brossard library, contributed to this 414-page book, which looks at the changing role of public libraries in society.
A total of 34 library professionals from around the world collaborated on the creation of this work, which paints a contemporary portrait of libraries. Topics covered include the architecture of libraries, their educational mission and the role they play in the democratic process. It also describes how public libraries have become a kind of third place, a place other than the home or workplace where people can socialize, learn and have fun.
“I’m proud to have had the opportunity to represent Canadian libraries in this project, and to rub shoulders with some of the biggest players in the world’s public libraries,” said Suzanne Payette. My article focuses on the distinction of Canadian libraries in keeping pace with society’s growing digital needs, enabling more democratic access to culture, information, literacy and education, whether literary, economic, digital or technological. This ability to adapt has enabled libraries to develop and maintain bonds of trust with their various communities,” she added.
The book can be downloaded free of charge from the Utrecht library website.
