Last night, the elected representatives passed a number of resolutions that will have a positive impact on citizens.
At last night’s regular meeting of the Brossard City Council, elected officials passed a number of resolutions that will have a positive impact on citizens, including a tax deferral and major investments in several city parks. Here are the highlights of this session.
Property taxes: 2nd instalment postponed by eight months
The City of Brossard will offer those who need it an eight (8)-month respite for taxpayers and businesses by extending the 2nd tax payment due date, originally scheduled for April 9, to December 7, 2021.
Citizens who have already sent in a post-dated cheque dated April 9, and who wish to take advantage of the extension of the payment due date, may contact Services Brossard at [email protected]. A member of the Finance Department will contact them to make arrangements.
Taxpayers who are able to pay their bills on time are encouraged to do so.
Parks: a $6,600,000 investment
Yesterday, the municipal council adopted a notice of motion and tabled draft by-law REG-438, the purpose of which will be to decree development work on parks and green spaces in 2021 and 2022. Locations include Beaumont, Bourgogne, Marin, Montpetit, Olympia, Poly-Aréna (design) and Sorbonne parks, as well as a synthetic soccer field at Poly-Aréna and a bike path at Radisson Park. This by-law is in the amount of $6,600,000, and includes work, internal and external professional services and financing costs. The regulations will be adopted at the next meeting.
Improving forest cover
As part of Arbour Day, $37,100 will be earmarked for tree planting, enabling the city to increase forest cover in areas most affected by heat islands. A follow-up of the planting work carried out in 2021 will be carried out by the Commission en environnement et développement durable.
Subsidy programs to combine economy and ecology
Incentives, such as subsidy programs, are effective tools for encouraging certain eco-responsible behaviors and choices. It is for this reason that the municipal council has adopted a resolution that will enable Brossard residents to benefit from subsidies for the purchase of eco-responsible consumer products, which will also promote the enhancement of the urban canopy, reduction at source, and the realization of citizen initiatives in environmental matters. A total of $27,500 will be allocated to these various programs.
Enhancing natural environments
Following the acquisition of a 23-hectare lot in the Bois de Brossard, and with the support of REM inc. and Nature-Action Québec (NAQ), the city will develop an agricultural meadow (5 hectares) and plant fruit bushes (1 hectare). This renaturalization project presents a rare opportunity to create a quality habitat for country bird species. The sum of $15,000 will be used for professional services to complete this project.
A look back at the 2020 – 2021 Environmental Action Plan
Of a total of 40 actions in the 2020 – 2021 Environmental Action Plan, 30 were completed over the past year, including :
- Adoption of the Urban Agriculture Policy;
- Monarch-friendly city” certification;
- Identification of strategies and actions to increase access to watercourses;
- Elaboration and presentation of the development concept for the Biopark reception site;
- Planting of four hundred and seventy (470) additional trees in public spaces, for a total of one thousand one hundred and twenty-three (1,123) trees and four thousand (4,000) shrubs and perennials;
