Brossard rectifies the facts concerning a request for a sign permit from Party Expert.
Following the publication of news reports in which the City of Brossard was cited for refusing a request for a poster permit for Party Expert,
the municipality wishes to rectify the situation by sharing details of the file in question. The following should shed some light on the situation and set the record straight.
- A signage request from Party Expert was analyzed and presented to the Comité consultatif d’urbanisme (CCU). It received a positive recommendation on July 3.
- The request was analyzed according to the objectives and criteria of the Site Planning and Architectural Integration Program (SPAIP) bylaw, concerning the size of the sign and its appearance, to harmonize with other signs on the same building.
- The application is progressing as planned and will be presented at the next council meeting on August 20.
- In accordance with established procedures, the Town must obtain a resolution from the Town Council in order to issue a sign permit subject to the SPAIP.
- While awaiting a permit for a permanent sign, the applicant may install a temporary banner.
As a precautionary measure, the City recommended that the applicant validate the conformity of his sign with the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) to avoid potential costs at a later date. It seemed like a formality, since the company had shared an OQLF francization certificate with the city.
It is important to note that Brossard does not have the authority to refuse a sign on the basis of language. This is a matter for the OQLF.
In light of the information shared, Ville de Brossard reiterates that the information disseminated is erroneous and that it never refused the posting request in question.
