This morning, a number of elected officials and members of the SSIAL took part in the official inauguration of the new fire station 44 in Brossard.
Longueuil, Monday, February 19, 2024 – This morning, several elected officials from the agglomeration of Longueuil and members of the Service de sécurité incendie de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SSIAL) officially inaugurated the new fire station 44 in Brossard: a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient fire station.
“We can be proud of the successful completion of this project. Improving our fire stations is one of the major investments included in the Schéma de couverture de risques incendies 2023-2027, which the SSIAL adopted last year. Our fire department, which ranks fourth in Quebec in terms of population coverage, is facing new realities, and we are choosing to innovate to maintain our excellent level of fire safety service on the territory. What’s more, thanks to the knowledge we’ve acquired about the prevalence of cancer and the awareness we’ve raised in recent years, the health of firefighters is now at the heart of our concerns when it comes to developing new fire stations, and this one is the first tangible example of that vision,” says Catherine Fournier, Mayor of the City of Longueuil and President of the Longueuil Agglomeration Executive Committee.
“Brossard residents will benefit from the very best in fire safety. Our city is growing, and it’s important to offer the population not only a quality of life, but also the assurance of living in a safe environment in terms of fire risk coverage,” said Brossard Mayor Doreeen Assaad.
Fire station 44 is the first in the agglomeration of Longueuil to feature a decontamination bay based on the new NFPA standards. It offers an optimized living environment and a number of other innovative features: three truck traffic bays, including the decontamination bay, radiant flooring in living areas to improve thermal comfort for occupants, a glazed tower to dry pipes in an environmentally-friendly way, and a system for capturing carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles at source. What’s more, energy efficiency measures for ventilation and heating systems, as well as all-LED lighting, are an integral part of the project.
“Our firefighters are looking forward to benefiting from these state-of-the-art facilities, which will enable them to operate in a modern and safe environment. The strategic positioning of this fire station will help us achieve our strike force objectives in line with our response time standards. I would like to underline the teamwork of all those involved in the various sectors of activity, which enabled us to erect a building in which every space was designed with the needs and safety of our teams in mind,” commented Jean Melançon, Director of the Service de sécurité incendie de l’agglomération de Longueuil.
Part of Longueuil’s Program triennal d’immobilisations (PTI) 2023-2024-2025 and Schéma de couverture de risques incendies, fire station 44 represents a total investment of $21.5 million. Now located at 2655, boulevard Matte, in Brossard, it will replace the fire station at 3800, boulevard Matte, whose building no longer met fire safety standards and requirements. The teams will start working in the new fire station on February 28.
