Ville de Brossard is pleased to participate as a pilot city in the installation of the Educational Slow Fire (Fred).
The City of Brossard is pleased to participate as a pilot city in the installation of Canada’s very first FredTM Educational Slow-Moving Light . The company responsible for the pilot project is Signalisation Kalitec. The traffic light is installed for 90 days and is located on Stravinski Street, near Académie Marie-Laurier in Brossard, a school for preschool, elementary and high school students. FredMC is a traffic calming measure that has already proved its worth in Europe. In France, it is used to limit excessive speeds in school zones and suburbs.
“As mayor, citizen and mother, I always want to improve the safety of our children and citizens. In Brossard, as in the vast majority of Quebec cities, making our streets safer is a priority. I’m proud to welcome this innovative pilot project to Brossard, which will have a positive impact on both walkers, by ensuring their safety, and drivers, by rewarding good driving habits. This FredTM is an additional tool that could be added to our speed mitigation measures,” said Mayor Doreen Assaad.
“This pilot project is part of a broader reflection on speed and safety in urban areas. The integration of this type of technology into the brossardois landscape is an interesting avenue to explore in order to improve the safety of our pedestrians, young and old alike”, adds Patrick Langlois, municipal councillor, P-V sectors, and chairman of the sustainable mobility committee.
“Excessive speeding around schools is a widespread problem in Quebec, and the FredTM Educational Slow-Motion Fire looks like a promising way of curbing it. Brossard is a city on the lookout for new technologies, and we’re proud to be working with its teams on this pilot project, which will enable us to study an innovative new technology and document its real impact on speed limit enforcement. This is a first in Canada to improve road sharing and safety for all,” says Anthony Lapointe, co-owner and sales director of Signalisation Kalitec.
How does it work?
Vehicle speed is detected in real time by FredMC. The return frequency of the wave reflecting off the moving vehicle determines its speed with great precision. FredMC displays a red “resting” light at all times, which turns green if the driver is travelling at a legal speed.
In the case of this pilot project in Brossard, the vehicle is currently detected at a distance of around 30 meters, and if the vehicle’s speed is compliant, FredMC turns green and the vehicle can continue on its way. If speed exceeds 30 km/h, FredMC ‘s light remains red, providing an effective, non-repressive warning.
The FredTM Educational Slowdown Light is a connected technology that enables real-time traffic measurement and remote control, as well as being easy to install and very affordable to manage, as it requires no excavation and is solar-powered. A pre-signal is also installed to warn of its presence. Signalisation Kalitec was responsible for selecting the site.
The pilot project is scheduled to run for 90 days, and if the results prove positive, the city may purchase a FredTM Educational Slowing Fire .
