Ménage ton parc | The city calls for civic-mindedness

The city is launching the Ménage ton parc campaign to raise public awareness of issues such as vandalism.

In the wake of its “À Brossard, on se respect” campaign, which has been running for several months now, the city is launching the “Ménage ton parc” campaign this week, to raise public awareness of issues such as vandalism, graffiti and nuisances like noise in its parks.

In recent years, the Ville de Brossard has noticed an increase in reports and complaints of irregular practices in its parks and recreational facilities. Most often it’s vandalism, illegal graffiti, an accumulation of garbage in certain places, uncollected dog excrement, noise or music at excessive volumes. The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought its share of hardships, undermining people’s patience and giving rise to more intolerance between citizens.

“The people of Brossard want their parks and public spaces to be attractive, clean and inviting, and so do we! The city invests time, money and energy. For the common good, to promote the quality of life in our neighbourhoods and to encourage people to live together, it’s essential that everyone, regardless of age, adopt an attitude that encourages respectful use of the various facilities,” explained Brossard Mayor Doreen Assaad.

A multiplatform awareness campaign

Using a variety of platforms including social media, radio, municipal publications and more, this offensive is aimed at all users of the parks, skate park, sports fields and dog park. Targeted signage is also planned throughout the region, mainly at problem locations.

Using colorful visuals and catchy phrases, the campaign gives the impression that the message is being delivered by an acquaintance or friend, since it uses colloquial language. Particular attention was paid to the treatment of the images in order to succeed in catching the discerning eye of young people, who are one of the campaign’s main target audiences. The slogan “Ménage ton parc” is the unifying element of the campaign, and can be found in every visual variation.

Vandalism is expensive!

The city estimates that vandalism-related expenses could reach $100,000 by 2022. Whether it’s replacing damaged plants or broken windows, damaged garbage cans, picnic tables, park benches or play modules, burnt chemical toilets or vandalized sports fields.

In recent years, the cost of bad citizenship on our territory has increased. Indeed, the various health measures in force at the time encouraged people to get out of their homes and discover or rediscover the parks in their neighborhoods. Unfortunately, some people have forgotten the notion of living together, which is essential to life in society.

Increasingly high unit costs

Not immune to inflation, unit costs for street furniture purchases have risen considerably between 2021 and 2022, by just over 64%. What’s more, last year alone nearly $9,500 was spent to remove illegal graffiti on the territory.

With its new Ménage ton parc campaign, the city hopes, among other things, to reduce the cost of repair and replacement operations linked to vandalism, increase citizens’ sense of pride in their facilities and, last but not least, promote community spirit.
