Students from École Saint-Laurent learn about municipal politics
Grade5 students from Saint-Laurent elementary school visited Brossard city hall on Monday for an introduction to municipal politics. The 26 students had the opportunity to meet Mayor Doreen Assaad and gain a better understanding of the role of elected municipal officials.
The aim of this educational activity was to familiarize students with the responsibilities of their city’s elected representatives, and to discover or deepen their knowledge of politics and the role of the various departments that make up the municipal administration.
“What a wonderful meeting! It was a great pleasure to exchange ideas and share my experience with young people who were curious, committed and brilliantly switched on. Their pertinent questions fuelled a rich discussion. It’s an activity I particularly cherish, because civic education plays a fundamental role in the vitality of our democracy. It’s crucial that young people understand the importance of their rights, duties and responsibilities as citizens, and how their voice can make a difference,” said Doreen Assaad.
