Elected officials adopted a number of resolutions at the July 6 Town Council meeting. Here are the highlights of this session.
At last night’s regular meeting of the Brossard City Council, elected officials adopted a number of resolutions that will, among other things, enable the city to proceed with a real estate acquisition, improve the urban canopy, develop a Climate Change Adaptation Plan, add a water play area to Sorbonne Park and acquire an online citizen participation platform. Here is a summary of the main points of the session.
Real estate acquisition on boulevard Milan
The city council has voted to acquire a plot of land, and a vacant building erected on it, on Milan Boulevard. “The City acquired this space to provide flexibility for future municipal projects. We believe that this space will provide us with a strategic location for new infrastructure that will serve the residents of the area. Residents will be consulted in due course to obtain their opinion on the desired use of this site,” declared Doreen Assaad, Mayor of Brossard.
Enhancing the urban canopy
An offshoot of the 2021-2023 Three-Year Capital Program, the public domain canopy enhancement project consists of a massive planting of around 2,500 trees on identified sites on the public domain over the next three years, starting with 600 trees for the year 2021. In addition to planting the trees, the project also includes installing and removing stakes, installing and removing winter protection, watering and pruning the trees.
The Board also awarded a contract to supply and deliver trees to the Centre de Jardin Brossard for the next edition of Arbor Day, to be held this fall. The next edition of this activity will enable 300 Brossardois to purchase a tree to help increase the forest cover on the territory.
“Greening our neighborhoods and combating heat islands are very important issues for an urban environment like ours. That’s why we’ve allocated a budget of $2.5 million over the next three years for planting on municipal property. These substantial sums will enable us to pursue our efforts to beautify our city and offer a green and sustainable legacy,” emphasized Ms. Assaad.
Climate change adaptation plan
In accordance with its 2020-2021 Environmental Action Plan, Brossard will begin developing a new Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Among other things, this new tool will make it possible to draw up a portrait of the territory, identify its vulnerabilities related to climate change, identify the adaptation measures to be put in place and determine a methodology for integrating climate change adaptation measures into municipal planning.
In the fall of 2020, Ville de Brossard was awarded financial assistance under the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation (MAMH) program to support the integration of climate change adaptation into municipal planning. This assistance covers 50% of the Plan’s costs, up to a maximum of $50,000.
Water games in Sorbonne Park
Another of the city’s parks will soon benefit from a new facility to keep children cool on hot summer days. The Sorbonne park has been identified as a site for a new water play area. The project involves integrating this new infrastructure into the park, with a universal accessibility component for all users. The cost of this work represents an investment of $798,651.64, taxes included.
New citizen participation platform
Brossard wishes to pursue its efforts so that Brossard residents can contribute to decision-making on projects that have an impact on their quality of life. That’s why the city will be setting up an online participation platform that will provide a one-stop shop for citizen participation, and measure residents’ perceptions and degree of involvement in various projects.
“We want Brossard to reflect the citizens who make it a dynamic and committed city. With this new platform, we’ll be able to poll our population on issues that affect their daily lives, and enable them to get even more involved in our community life,” asserted the mayor.
