Forty grade 5 immersion students from Harold-Napper school met the Mayor at Town Hall on February 4, to learn more about municipal politics and the role of the various departments within the Town.
This civic education activity, held in the municipal council chambers, aimed to inform young people about the responsibilities of elected municipal officials and the issues they face. The program also included an overview of the different levels of government. The students also had the chance to take part in a simulated town council meeting and debate some of the items on the agenda drawn up especially for the occasion.
“I’m always delighted to welcome young people here at City Hall and share my knowledge and daily life with them. Civic education is essential in a society so that our children, these future voters, understand the importance of exercising their duty as citizens in a society to keep democracy alive and their voices heard,” said Mayor Doreen Assaad.
