06 July 2022 Last update 17/05/2025

OUTDOOR DESIGN, ARBOR DAY AND CLIMATE PROTECTION WERE ON THE AGENDA AT THE JULY 5, 2022 CITY COUNCIL MEETING.

At the City of Brossard’s regular council meeting held on July 5, elected officials awarded various contracts and adopted a number of resolutions. The resolutions adopted will, in particular :

  • begin work on the Centre de plein air and the Grand parc urbain;
  • to renew the Arbor Day activity;
  • join the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program.

A new lease on life at the Centre plein air

Elected officials were delighted to announce the sum of $5,751,623 for development work at the Centre de plein air. This vast recreational project will also focus on preserving the richness of the Bois de Brossard.

The money will be used first and foremost to cover a mandate for design, plans and specifications for the development of a reception area and trails. Once this task has been completed, it will be possible to plan the next phase, which will include a chalet, recreational areas and parking. Work is scheduled for completion in 2024.

Continued development of the Grand Parc urbain

The sum required to undertake the development work on phase 3 of the Grand Parc urbain has been granted by the municipal council. The $6,950,000 will be used to carry out work in the central area of the park (near the park chalet parking lot). The project, scheduled for completion in 2023, will include :

  • construction of a refrigerated ice rink with a roof and a building attached to the rink;
  • development of a disc-golf circuit and installation of basketball baskets;
  • the addition of an illuminated pedestrian and cycle path;
  • the landscaping of the area;
  • installation of a permanent retention basin;
  • the addition of signage and street furniture.

Arbor Day returns

As part of Arbor Day, the city will be offering 300 trees to the public at low cost. This annual event gives Brossard residents the opportunity to purchase a tree at an unbeatable price to enhance their landscaping and help improve the urban canopy. The registration period for trees will begin in August, and will be highlighted in a promotional campaign.

Arbour Day is part of a series of actions undertaken following the City’s adoption of a tree policy. By organizing this event, the city wishes to promote the environmental benefits of trees in the urban environment, such as improving air quality and reducing heat islands. Since its creation in 2009, over 10,000 plants have been distributed as part of Arbor Day.

New commitment to climate protection

City council members confirmed Brossard’s willingness to join the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program. By participating in this program, the city aims to consolidate its knowledge and obtain technical support in the fight against climate change. It also wishes to promote the potential for financial assistance in the development of strategic documents aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Created by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI Canada), the PCP program is designed to help municipalities combat climate change and reduce their GHG emissions.
