Civil Protection Week – Until May 13 | Are you ready for 72 hours?

08 May 2023 Last update 17/05/2025

Ville de Brossard would like to inform the public that Civil Protection Week is currently underway, and will continue until May 13. This year’s theme: My safety, my responsibility. To mark the occasion, the City of Brossard would like to remind Brossard residents of some safety tips to be prepared for any eventuality, including the preparation of a 72-hour kit.

It is up to citizens to ensure their own safety and that of their loved ones for the first 72 hours in the event of a disaster or emergency. Why 72 hours? This is the estimated time it will take for the situation to subside somewhat, and for the rescue services to get organized. To last 72 hours, it’s important for every household to have its own kit.

72-hour kit

Using a large backpack or a clearly marked bin, you place the essential items you need to hold on until help arrives.

Here is a list of essential items to have in your emergency kit:

  • Drinking water (6 liters per person);
  • Non-perishable food (for at least 3 days);
  • Manual can opener;
  • Battery-powered radio – spare batteries;
  • Headlamp or flashlight – spare batteries or crank lamp;
  • Lighter or matches and candles ;
  • First-aid kit: antiseptics, analgesics, adhesive bandages, sterile gauze pads, scissors, etc.

You can add other items, but the important thing is to have these essentials for staying home for three days. And let’s not forget pets, who are also victims of major disasters.

So here’s a list ofpet kit essentials:

  • Non-perishable food (for at least 3 days);
  • Drinking water (4 L/day for a medium-sized dog and 1 L/day for a medium-sized cat);
  • Bowls and can opener for food;
  • Newspapers, litter or a litter tray, depending on the animal;
  • A blanket and a toy;
  • A list of places to leave your pet in case you have to leave;
  • First-aid kit: pet first-aid manual, antiseptics, pair of vinyl medical examination gloves, self-adhesive bandages, sterile gauze pads, tick forceps, scissors, etc.

An emergency situation can arise at any time and with little warning. With a little preparation, we can learn to be ready and react quickly, to protect ourselves first and foremost, and to help others and our pets. During Civil Protection Week, Brossard City Hall will be illuminated in the colors of the Civil Protection logo, in blue and orange.
