Totaling $199.5 million, the 2022 budget adopted by the municipal council includes an average tax increase of 2.9%.
Brossard mayor Doreen Assaad, accompanied by councillor Sophie Allard and councillor Daniel Lucier, who also chairs the finance committee, presented the city’s 2022 budget at a special public meeting this evening. Totaling $199.5 million, the 2022 budget adopted by the municipal council includes an average tax increase of 2.9%.
“I’m proud that the first budget of the new council elected in November proposes improved services for families while maintaining a low level of taxes for taxpayers. For me, it’s essential that the population be able to enjoy an exemplary quality of life while offering one of the lowest tax rates for cities of comparable size,” declared Mayor Assaad.
“Brossard experienced a meteoric rise in property values, as well as a significant 5.7% increase in its contribution to the agglomeration of Longueuil, all in an inflationary context. In spite of this, we were able to keep tax increases below the rate of inflation,” noted Finance Committee Chairman Daniel Lucier.
Service and infrastructure enhancements continue into 2022
In 2021, despite the ongoing pandemic, Ville de Brossard remained focused on enhancing its services and improving its infrastructure, which is why the 2022 budget includes specific efforts to meet citizens’ expectations.
Among the initiatives that will be put forward are an increase in the animation services offered at day camps, improved winter maintenance of sidewalks, continued efforts to obtain a police station on the city’s territory, an improved offer of cultural activities, increased accessibility of public restrooms in parks, and improved floral arrangements and park maintenance. On the environmental front, Brossard will continue its efforts to position itself as a leading green city that respects the principles of sustainable development.
Three-year capital program 2022-2023-2024
The three-year capital expenditure program (PTI) for 2022-2024 includes major projects totalling almost $207 million over a three-year period. A total of $121.8 million will be allocated to infrastructure, $40.6 million to buildings, $38.5 million to parks and $5.8 million to information technology and various equipment. The city will continue its program of infrastructure improvements, notably with the construction of a noise barrier in sector R, development work on boul. Grande Allée, rehabilitation of the Grande Allée viaduct and pavement rehabilitation – by 2022, of sections of Stravinsky and San Francisco streets. On the buildings front, there will be the demolition of the old police station on Milan Boulevard, and a program to replace swimming pools and pool cottages, starting with the one in Marie-Victorin Park. With regard to parks and playgrounds, upgrading will continue, with the aim of completing 10 parks in three years. The Marin and Olympia parks will also be completed, and work will continue on the large urban park.
“I enter this new mandate motivated to remain a mayor at the service of all Brossard residents. Together, I am convinced that we will be able to give Brossard the growth it deserves and make it more dynamic than ever. Our budget respects taxpayers’ ability to pay, with a vision that will foster its development. Whether it’s our infrastructure that needs to be rehabilitated, our parks that need to be renovated or our cultural activities that need to be offered, citizens can count on all our elected officials to make our city a great place to live in a safe environment,” concluded Mayor Assaad.
