Brossard to take part in Earth Day Canada planting relay

22 April 2023 Last update 17/05/2025

Brossard is proud to announce its participation in the Earth Day Canada planting relay.

The City of Brossard, in collaboration with Earth Day Canada, is proud to announce its participation in the Planting Relay, an initiative launched to mark the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The municipal tree-planting relay is an ideal way to highlight cities’ commitment to a more sustainable world and the fight against climate change. Brossard is therefore committed to planting a minimum of 50 trees on Earth Day, and to pursuing its objective of planting thousands of trees over the coming years.

“The city is redoubling its efforts to combat climate change and ensure that we develop our territory in a sustainable way. Greening our territory is a priority to combat heat islands and improve air quality, and in Brossard we’re taking action, having planted over 8,000 trees in the last 5 years. Joining Earth Day as part of the municipal planting relay was therefore a natural for us, and demonstrates the commitment and determination of the municipal council to make the environment a priority”, declared Brossard Mayor Doreen Assaad and Sophie Allard, municipal councillor and president of the Commission de l’environnement et du développement durable.

“We’re delighted to count the city of Brossard among the municipalities participating in the Earth Day planting relay, and we applaud the drive to increase greening as well as the environmental initiatives announced on this April 22. A fine example of Earth Day celebration through action!” – Valérie Mallamo, Executive Director, Earth Day Canada

The city is also taking advantage of this event to announce a calendar of environmental actions and initiatives over the coming weeks:

  • Registration opens – Environmental grant programs

Starting today, April 22, citizens who want to save money while adopting new habits that benefit the environment can take advantage of the five (5) subsidy programs offered by the City:

  • Planting of the first tree in the front yard.
  • Reusable feminine hygiene products.
  • Washable diapers.
  • Home composters.
  • Save drinking water.

Those interested in taking advantage of these offers are invited to submit their applications today by visiting Grants.

  • Environmental and sustainable development initiatives

During the month of May, Ville de Brossard will introduce a grant program designed to encourage community initiatives in favor of the environment and sustainable development. Stay tuned to brossard.ca/subsidies.

  • Spring visit to the Bois de Brossard organized by Vigile verte

In collaboration with the City of Brossard, the Vigile Verte suggests a group outing guided by biologist Philippe Blais to observe and learn about the spring flora of our maple groves during a period of interesting flowering. It will be an opportunity to discover other natural wonders. The event will take place on May 20. Full details are available on the Vigile Verte social networks.

  • Parc Poly-Aréna clean-up – organized by Investissement Québec

On May 18, Investissement Québec teams will be cleaning up Poly-Aréna Park. These clean-ups will help prepare the park for the summer season, as well as providing a great bonding activity for the volunteers!

  • Remarkable trees wanted!

Over the spring, City teams will be asking residents to identify remarkable and exceptional trees in the Brussells area. Those already identified will also be featured on our social media channels.

  • Single-use plastic reduction – Retail campaign

On February 14, in line with the city’s goal of reducing waste at source, the municipal council adopted an amendment to the by-law governing the distribution of shopping bags. As of June 1, 2023, it will be forbidden to distribute any plastic shopping bag, regardless of thickness, on Brossard territory. The city will therefore be supporting its merchants by providing them with information on the reduction of single-serve plastic, through a Green Patrol tour, which will take place over the course of the summer.
