Brossard is promoting safe behavior near schools for the start of the 2026 school year

Road Safety Campaign: “Your Caution Is Notgoing Unnoticed”

To mark the start of the school year, the Ville de Brossard launched a major awareness campaign called “Your Caution Makes a Difference,” in line with its top priority: the safety of everyone. Conducted near schools, this initiative takes a positive approach based on recognition rather than reprimand to encourage safe behavior and promote its adoption.

As part of this initiative, the mayor, members of the city council, and representatives of the Longueuil Metropolitan Police Service (SPAL) visited several schools in the area to meet with drivers and families who are practicing safe driving habits. Other schools may be visited during the school year.

On Tuesday, September 15, Mayor Doreen Assaad, accompanied by Christian Gaudette of the city council and representatives from SPAL, was present near the new school located at the intersection of Rue de Châteauneuf and Boulevard du Quartier. In particular, the teams on site took the time to congratulate families, parents, and drivers who were being careful to ensure the children’s safety as they arrived at school.

During their visits to schools, elected officials give drivers who practice safe driving a small token of appreciation to keep in their cars: an air freshener featuring Brossard’s image!

“No trip should compromise a child’s safety. That’s why safety is our number one priority in Brossard. Every time someone slows down, yields at a crosswalk, or follows a crossing guard’s instructions, they are directly helping to protect our young people. These actions deserve to be recognized, celebrated, and emulated,” said Brossard Mayor Doreen Assaad.

A Positive Approach to Collective Responsibility

During school drop-off and pick-up times, the areas around schools become particularly busy, with drivers, parents, children, school buses, cyclists, pedestrians, and crossing guards all sharing the space. In this context, everyone’s caution plays an important role in ensuring safe travel.

“Road safety is one of SPAL’s top priorities for 2026–2028. “Through our partnership with the Ville de Brossard, we aim to encourage safe driving habits and remind everyone that simple actions—such as slowing down, yielding the right of way, or following a crossing guard’s instructions—can make a real difference in children’s safety,” emphasizes SPAL.

This year, Brossard is using the start of the school year as an opportunity to remind people of the importance of safe driving habits, while emphasizing a positive, people-centered, and preventive approach.

The behaviors emphasized as part of the initiative include, in particular:

  • slow down when approaching a school;
  • yield the right of way when required;
  • Follow the instructions of the school crossing guards;
  • use the landing docks properly;
  • Avoid stopping and maneuvers that could impair visibility or disrupt traffic;
  • Show courtesy toward other road users.

Through this initiative, carried out in collaboration with SPAL, Brossard aims to remind everyone that safety around schools is a shared responsibility. Every precaution we take helps create a safer environment for children.

Your caution is evident. Thank you for looking out for our children.
