It would like to express its full solidarity with the Asian community and denounce the racist acts to which it has fallen victim.
The municipal council of the city of Brossard expresses its solidarity with the Asian community and denounces the racist acts of which it is victim, while the number of discriminatory events has been on the rise in Canada since the beginning of the pandemic. Indeed, the health crisis has particularly exacerbated the spread of hatred towards this community over the past year, a context compounded by last week’s Atlanta massacre, which left eight people dead, including six Asian women.
“City Council members represent the great cultural diversity of our city, and we condemn all forms of racism and discrimination, here and elsewhere. The increase in racial discrimination over the past year shows just how far we still have to go in the fight against racism. That’s why it’s important to remember the need to redouble our efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination, and to remember that tolerance, dialogue and respect for diversity are more essential than ever,” said Doreen Assaad, Mayor of Brossard.
For her part, Michelle J. Hui, city councillor and president of the Commission de la diversité culturelle, took part in a demonstration yesterday organized by the Groupe d’Entraide contre le Racisme envers les Asiatiques au Québec, as part of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event, aimed at denouncing racist acts against the Asian community, attracted over 3,000 people to Montreal’s Chinatown.
“Whatever our background, members of all communities wish to flourish and live in peace and harmony within our society. Discrimination, both past and recent, tarnishes these aspirations, and that’s why it’s necessary to support those who are afflicted by it, because in the end, it always ends up affecting the whole population,” Ms. Hui emphasized with emotion.
With over 57 cultural communities, Brossard is a mosaic where all women and men enjoy harmonious integration throughout the territory. The richness of their culture and traditions makes them a distinctive environment open to the world.
