The Action Plan prioritizes 50 actions to be carried out by 2023, some of which have already been completed or are in progress.
The City of Brossard is proud to continue its environmental efforts by adopting its 2022-2023 urban agriculture action plan. The Action Plan consolidates the city’s commitment and prioritizes 50 actions to be carried out by 2023, some of which have already been completed or are underway.
Urban agriculture as a flagship direction for sustainable development
The many proposed actions are articulated around seven ambitious orientations stemming from the City of Brossard’s Urban Agriculture Policy, which serve as guidelines for the integration and development of urban agriculture on the territory:
- Act collectively to make the necessary efforts to become a nourishing city;
- Showcase Brossard’s potential to become a benchmark for urban agriculture;
- Affirming the city’s commitment to urban agriculture;
- Encourage the development of a common and inclusive agriculture on the territory, while giving Brossard its own identity;
- Encourage the creation of partnerships between the various players involved in the development of urban agriculture;
- Inform, raise awareness and educate the public about the dimensions and challenges of urban agriculture;
- Encourage citizen involvement in urban agriculture projects and recognize volunteer involvement.
Projects to gather ideas
With citizen involvement at the heart of the action plan, Brossard residents will be encouraged, through a wide range of projects and activities, to adopt various urban agriculture practices. In particular, the city is committed to developing a network of urban edible facilities, which will be made available to citizens. A demonstration plot featuring a variety of plants has already been set up on the grounds of City Hall. A pilot project for an edible ornamental garden is also available on municipal land, showcasing the range of possibilities offered by urban agriculture.
“Urban agriculture is a fast-growing movement and is at the heart of our priorities, with the panoply of environmental and socio-economic benefits it generates. The Plan adopted yesterday is an important step towards achieving our objectives for the territory, and demonstrates the seriousness of our approach through the implementation of some 50 concrete actions that will be carried out by the end of 2023,” emphasized Mayor Doreen Assaad.
Collaboration at the heart of success
To ensure a better understanding of the responsibilities involved in planning and carrying out urban agriculture activities, the Plan also highlights the division of responsibilities between the various City departments by sector of activity.
“Once again, working with the Commission de l’environnement et du développement durable (CEDD) to develop the Plan has enabled us to respond to Brossard’s needs and challenges. The values conveyed by urban agriculture are shared by all generations, and it is by working together that we can ensure the success of projects, the creation of quality living environments and the preservation of the environment”, concluded Sophie Allard, President of the CEDD and City Councillor.
