Brossard adopts a new Environmental Policy

Environment 18 September 2025 Last update 18/09/2025

A strong commitment to building a sustainable, resilient and exemplary city

At its September 16, 2025 municipal council meeting, the City of Brossard adopted a new Environmental Policy, replacing the one in effect since 2013. This strategic update was necessary in a context marked by climate change, densification of the territory and the city’s desire to create an environment that contributes to the well-being of its growing population.

A rethought policy for the future

The objectives of the Policy review were to:

  • update municipal priorities to better meet the challenges of today and tomorrow;
  • strengthen the coherence of public action, by integrating the environment into all municipal decisions;
  • align the city’s commitments with government orientations and targets in terms of the environment, sustainable development and land-use planning;
  • mobilize the community to achieve an ambitious vision based on the ecological transition.

The result of rigorous reflection and collaborative work with internal stakeholders, partners and citizen members of the Commission de l’environnement et du développement durable (CEDD), the Policy has become the guiding framework for municipal action on the environment.

“Today, this policy embodies the foundations of our vision: to protect and enhance biodiversity, develop sustainable infrastructures and act for the collective well-being. In Brossard, the future is written in green – and it is with this vision and sense of responsibility that we are building it.” – Doreen Assaad, Mayor of Brossard

Five key directions

Brossard’s new Environmental Policy is based on five major orientations:

  1. Biodiversity and ecosystems – Preserving, restoring and enhancing natural environments, biodiversity, ecosystems and agricultural land in a rapidly changing city.
  2. Resilient living environments – Adapting neighborhoods to climate realities and improving quality of life.
  3. Ecological footprint – Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainable practices.
  4. Governance – Putting the environment at the heart of municipal planning and decision-making.
  5. Collective commitment – Mobilizing citizens and partners around the ecological transition.

“In Brossard, we have chosen to take action to create an environment that allows us to live better and healthier on our territory. This policy is a living, rallying tool that aims for concrete results: reducing heat islands, adapting to climate change, greening the territory, enhancing woodlands and creating biodiversity corridors. Together, we’re doing more than shaping the future: we’re cultivating it. – Sophie Allard, municipal councillor, sector S, and president of the CEDD

An exemplary and inspiring approach

With this new Environmental Policy, Brossard is reaffirming its commitment to consolidating the ecological transition and implementing environmentally-friendly actions. The city intends to act in an exemplary way, involving its citizens in concrete projects that will improve their daily lives, strengthen the area’s resilience and protect its natural riches for future generations. A strong gesture that confirms that the environment is more than ever at the heart of all the city’s decisions.
