“It’s a major step forward that we’ll be taking today,” enthused Doreen Assaad, Mayor of Brossard.
Longueuil, March 24, 2022 – At its meeting on March 24, 2022, the agglomeration council is expected to ratify a specific mandate given to the public safety commission: that of studying different scenarios for the establishment of a police station on Ville de Brossard territory. The mandates have already been discussed at the agglomeration mayors’ table and submitted to the elected representatives of their respective municipal councils, with a view to their adoption.
“ It’s a major step forward that we’ll be taking today, ” enthused Doreen Assaad, Mayor of Brossard. ” This is the result of many years of effort. The establishment of such a position will create the image of a police force that is more present, more visible and more involved in its community. A strong desire on the part of the public was expressed at various forums, including the consultations conducted by SPAL in 2019. The forthcoming opening of three REM stations, the fact that the City of Brossard is booming and that we will soon pass the 100,000 mark in population are all factors that militate in favor of establishing a police station on our territory. In fact, every Quebec city with a population of over 50,000 has a police station. “said Ms. Assaad.
” As president of the agglomeration’s executive committee, it’s important for me to play a unifying role and resolve issues that have been dragging on for too long due to political conflicts inherited from the era of mergers and demergers. A generation later, we need to turn the page once and for all and see our agglomeration alliance as a strength. The question of a police station in Brossard has been discussed for 20 years. Now, just a few months after the arrival of the new agglomeration council, we are finally setting a clear direction in this direction. My aim has always been to provide collaborative leadership, and I’m proud to see the first fruits of that commitment. “added Catherine Fournier, Mayor of Longueuil.
“I’m well aware of the wishes of the mayors of the agglomeration, as well as those of the council. In the event of a police station being built in Brossard, we’ll have to ask ourselves the following questions: where is the best place to locate it, and what form should it take? More than just a building made of concrete or bricks, the Brossard police station will have to enable better coordination of our teams in the field, in order to offer even more effective services to citizens, in keeping with the implementation of our philosophy of Police de Concertation et de proximité avec la population”, continued Fady Dagher, Director of the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL).
If the mandate is ratified by the agglomeration council, SPAL should present different scenarios to the members of the public safety commission in the coming weeks, before presenting a formal project which could materialize over the next few years.
