Marie-José Gustave

About the artist

Originally from Guadeloupe, Marie-José Gustave has lived in Québec since 1998. His exhibition evokes the links between the societies that have shaped his identity, and by extension is a reflection on the meeting of cultures and diversity.

With a master’s degree in garment production obtained in France, Marie-José Gustave has always had a fascination for fiber, and paper in particular, for its flexibility and rigidity, which allow it to be given various dimensions as well as textures.

A self-taught artist, her work is based on experimenting with materials and mixing craft techniques: basketry, knitting, crochet…
Her creations, influenced by her Caribbean origins, lie somewhere between design and contemporary craftsmanship. Inspired by the diverse cultures she has encountered, she creates sculptural works in paper and cardboard thread, as well as functional artworks.

Marie-José Gustave is a professional member of the Conseil des métiers d’art du Québec.
Recipient of grants from the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts, her work has been exhibited in Canada and abroad.

The three-dimensional works, created using basketry, knitting and crochet techniques, let light shine through and play with shadows. Each work is seen from a different perspective. Light changes the way you look at things, and preconceived ideas are replaced by experience.

Opening and closing times

The gallery will be closed from December 18 to January 12 inclusively for the holiday season.
Opening hours :

• Wednesday and Thursday, 4 to 8 p.m.
• Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Opening hours may be extended during events presented by the City.
