Les Jellybeans contre-attaquent is a celebration of artist Magali Thibault Gobeil’s joie de vivre, featuring her psychedelic universe, her savoir-faire and her excessiveness. Amalgamating her practice in fine jewelry and visual art, she offers a service that disregards the normative restrictions that melt the barrier between visual arts and fine crafts.
You’ll discover gigantic rings, exploding bracelets, dripping necklaces and brooches with surprising textures, interspersed with sculptures descending from the sky and splashes of color. Keen to test the boundaries between jewelry and sculpture, the artist elevates synthetic resins and plastics to the status of precious, noble materials. Their shine, textures and vibrant colors inspire sensoriality and wonder. The sinuous, supple, organic shapes call for an expansive imagination and an incursion into the world of dreams, childhood and sweet memories.
Magali Thibault Gobeil goes beyond the presentation of one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect her vast technical know-how and exhilarating creativity, to create a total mise en espace in which the gallery space is exploited to its full potential. Viewers are invited to immerse themselves in the exhibition and take advantage of its sensory offerings. In this playful journey punctuated by installations, suspended sculptures and explosions of color, she aims to envelop you in happiness. Like islands of greenery in the heart of cities, this exhibition is an island of joy in the midst of the frenzy of everyday life. About the artist…
Jeweller, sculptor and recipient of the Prix François-Houdé (2017), Magali Thibault Gobeil was born in 1985 in Longueuil, Quebec, Canada. She now lives in Saint-Lambert and works in Montréal in her studio-laboratory in the Grover building. A 2013 graduate of the École de joaillerie de Montréal, Magali pursues a career in which the research and exuberance of form and the exploration of material are at the heart of her practice.
As soon as she graduated, her work was noticed and rewarded in Canada and abroad. In her young career, she has been a finalist for the Prix Jean Cartier (Quebec) in 2019, the Arts and Craft Awards (Croatia) in 2014 and the Niche Student Awards (USA) in 2013. The recipient of numerous grants and awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, she has presented her fine jewelry work in over 40 solo and group exhibitions over the past ten years. His work has been seen by audiences in numerous venues in Canada, the United States, France, Spain, Romania, Greece and Latvia.
A tireless researcher, Magali never stops training, combining workshops and master classes. She is involved in various cultural mediation workshops and also in the community, notably with the organization Les Impatients, where she gives art and jewelry workshops. Today, her work lies at the intersection of jewelry, sculpture and public art. She was also a finalist in the competitions to integrate the arts into the architecture of the Simard-Riverside traffic circle in Saint-Lambert (2020) and the École Georges-P-Vanier in Brossard (2021). She presented her first outdoor sculptures, La Forêt enchantée, at the Centre d’art Diane-Dufresne in winter 2021.
