Description
In Earth and Water: Putting Down Roots, Brossard-based artist Chantal St-Pierre presents a series of colorful aquatic landscapes populated by plant roots, fish native to Quebec, and invasive aquatic species. She also turns her attention to ornamental fish living in ponds, far from the rivers and lakes they have never known.
Through his works, the artist explores the themes of adaptation, coexistence, and naturalization—realities that are also reflected in the human experience.
The compositions thus draw a metaphor between aquatic environments and life journeys. Like an invisible thread that connects individuals to a community and weaves a sense of belonging, Chantal St-Pierre’s project explores the events and transitions experienced throughout one’s life. This project builds on her research-based creative work, affirming her artistic practice and her quest to find a sense of belonging.

The paintings of Chantal St-Pierre, an artist from Brossard, are created using mixed media, alternating between acrylic and charcoal. In search of new aesthetic dimensions, she is currently working on a series of engravings.
Her work, which is both introspective and meditative, gives concrete form to her research-based practice through an autobiographical approach. It is through her artistic practice that pathways are forged between territories, circumstances, and imperceptible traces, making the flow between her art and her life—and between art and life—more fluid. She explores the nature of various invisible and intangible traces by giving them form and meaning.
